Susan Barnes Walker - biography

Susan feels honored to be receiving, on May 21, the Fruits of Distinction Award for Best Female Lead in a Full-Length Production for her role as Mary Ann in last October's Fresh Fruit Festival run of Duncan Pflaster's THE WASTES OF TIME; it was a dream come true to play it again after originating the role in the 2006 Midtown International Festival production.
This December, Susan for a second year in a row had the pleasure of playing assorted roles in a reading of Mark Finley's Christmas radio play, CHRISTMAS MOON, for TOSOS II. She can be seen briefly invading the living room to try to spoil the experience of a viewer trapped in an ANIMAL HOARDERS marathon, as part of ONION NEWS NETWORK's Season 2, Episode 8 on IFC..!!!

Other work has included the title character in Mark Finley's one-act THANK YOU, NANNYANNIE in Series A of Emerging Artists Theatre's Fall EATfest at TADA Theatre; Mr. Finley directed her through a magical run in Meryl Cohn's AND SOPHIE COMES TOO, as part of the 2009 NYC Fringe Festival & its Encore Series. Andy Propst of BACKSTAGE called her work "a genuinely hilarious cameo" & Roger Nasser of nytheatre.com wrote "Susan Barnes Walker gives a great comedic performance...She is a sheer delight!"; Ed Valentine's THEATRE IS THE THING WITH TENTACLES(Mirror Repertory Theatre); THE SNOB, directed by her beloved late acting teacher, Salem Ludwig; THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR(Mistress Ford) - Instant Shakespeare Company; THIS WAKEFUL NIGHT(Kate Chopin) - National Arts Club, Players Club, & NYPL; THE MONKEY'S PAW(Mrs. White) - Looking Glass Forum; THE CURIOUS SAVAGE(Florence) - DJM Productions; ALL MY SONS(Lydia) -The Workshop Theater; BEYOND THERAPY(Prudence) -Grove Street Playhouse; SAVAGE IN LIMBO(April) -Producers Club; EINE BRECHT EHRUNG(Mother Courage/Singer) -Feral Arts Center; BLOOD ON THE CAT'S NECK(Phoebe Zeitgeist) - Fassbinder Festival. Susan has acted in over thirty other unlisted plays, original & older, many directed by directors on the resume.

Excerpts from other reviews:
For THE WASTES OF TIME (2006):
"I have often admired the actress Susan Barnes Walker, and here she is perfect, as usual, in the role of Mary Ann." Mario Fratti, AMERICA OGGI
"...it's Walker's elegant portrayal of Mary Ann that anchors the production. She's fantastic as an eccentric yet grounded woman and mother, easily allowing us to believe she could accept her son's homosexuality, having once been a bit of a sexual rebel herself before donning her housewifely apron." Jerry Portwood, BACKSTAGE
"But the richest, quirkiest, and most complex acting is from Susan Barnes Walker as every gay boy's dream mom, understanding and accepting to a fault, yet when her Flower Child breeding cracks and gives way to rage and outrage, she is frightening and compelling." Bob Ost, TRU Online.
For SKERRIES:
"...with Susan Barnes Walker a standout as the oldest Elvery, Maisie, naive to the point of retardation, but still somehow entirely credible and sympathetic." Joseph Hurley, IRISH ECHO
