Richard Pait - biography

Richard is a native of North Carolina who has lived in 14 states, ranging from the Southeast and Deep South to the Pacific Northwest and finally, New York, for the last 25 years.

After completing high school and his undergraduate degree in Louisiana, Richard returned to North Carolina for the graduate theatre program at UNC, Chapel Hill. Following his training in the MFA program, Richard was invited to be an intern with Playmakers Repertory Company and received his Equity card with that company prior to stage managing for two seasons for Opryland in Branson, MO, before Branson was booming, and then in Nashville. While acting in commercials in Nashville, Richard earned his Screen Actors Guild card.

Richard taught theatre on the college level and directed four shows at his alma mater, Louisiana College in Pineville, LA, before returning to New York to pursue his acting career. In New York City, Richard was actively involved in several startup theatre companies, including the Ohio Theatre Company, Northern Lights Theatre, Montana Theater Company, and Teach-A-Dog Artists Cooperative before co-founding Rattlestick Theatre Company in 1992 with his business partner Daniel Andries (whom he met in the NYU undergraduate program during the ‘80’s). Rattlestick is currently a thriving Equity company in the West Village under the Artistic Direction of playwright David VanAsselt. Rattlestick is Richard’s proudest theater accomplishment.

Richard has been involved in scores of student film productions over the last 25 years, and has had the pleasure of working with many NYU students, including Jenniphr Goodman (“The Tao of Steve”) in one of her earlier works, “The Dark Forest”. He has worked with student film makers from UNC, NYU, Columbia University, Hunter College, New York Film Academy, Florida State University and SUNY Purchase. Several of the NYU films have won critical acclaim and Richard received the New York University’s First Run Festival Award for Acting for his portrayal of Jake Walmuth in the short film, “Lena” in 1992 from a field of over 385 entries.

Following a long hiatus after the 1992 birth of his twin sons, Matthew and Eric, and their younger brother Dylan, Richard has returned to his pursuit of acting as a career. Richard has written, directed and produced. He has been a salesman, a teacher and a businessman.
